Leon Borensztein

PROUD TO PRESENT

EXHIBITION DATES: 7.7.2018 – 8.25.2018 / OPENING 7.7.2018 6PM–9PM

An intense personal narrative and documentation spanning 30 years of the birth and subsequent life of photographer Leon Borensztein’s daughter Sharon, who suffers from an array of mental and physical disabilities. On view is a large selection of black and white exhibition prints, working test prints, diaries, and other media that offer a unique insight into Leon’s work and thought process layer by layer.

„Throughout my artistic career I have been driven by the need to give voice to the unheard and unseen. This desire became a personal passion when my daughter Sharon was born. I started photographing my daughter before she was born and I have never stopped.” This becomes evident when confronted with the overwhelming nature of the selection.

This series is considered to be Borensztein’s most personal work this is reinforced to the viewer by the intimacy found. Taking that which is close and personal to him to create his art. He photographs with integral beauty the mundane and forced situations of his daily routine highlighting the harsh realities and beautiful nuances of a life imposed on him. Borensztein uses his camera as a therapeutic means for understanding and self-analysis.

Leon Borensztein received his MFA in Photography from San Francisco Art Institute. He has had an extensive teaching and editorial career, appeared in publications as Vogue, The New York Times, and Life. Leon has taught at San Francisco Art Institute; University of California, Berkeley; and the California College of Arts. In 1987 Borensztein received the Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship. Borensztein’s work has been exhibited in over 10 countries and 32 cities internationally and included in the collections of Biblioteque Nationale Paris, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, San Francisco MOMA, Chicago Art Institute, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.
