Dwa wyjazdy z kamera na Ukrainę, jeden do Polski i jeden do Izraela, łącznie 25 dni zdjeciowych, trojka operatorów, dwie montazystki, kilka miesięcy montażu .. i trzy lata pózniej, wiosna 2014 roku mamy pierwszy pokaz premierowy filmu “Powroty Szymona”(„Shimon’s Returns”)

W historii Szymona Redlicha zafascynował nas jego oryginalny epizod aktorski z dzieciństwa, kiedy wystąpił w głośnym później filmie zrealizowanym w Polsce w 1948 roku. Ów film to „Unzere Kinder” czyli „Nasze Dzieci”, film fabularny w języku jidysz, do którego większość scen nakręcono w Domu Dziecka w Helenówku, w którym Szymon spędził kilka wakacyjnych miesięcy. Postanowiliśmy też ten epizod aktorski wykorzystać w naszym filmie, przeplatając go z prawdziwą historią Szymona i jego walką o przetrwanie w czasie Holokaustu.

„Powroty Szymona” („Shimon’s Returns”) to przede wszystkim opowieść o człowieku, który sam o sobie powiada, że „kolekcjonuje pamięć”. Dlatego wciąż powraca do Polski i na Ukrainę, do miejsc swoich wspomnień z młodości i miejsc, gdzie spotkał ludzi, bez których te powroty nie byłyby mu dane.

Slawomir Grünberg is an award-winning documentary film producer, director and cinematographer – an independent artist, focusing on social, political, environmental and identity issues. A graduate of the Polish Film School in Lodz, author of over 45 documentary projects, Grunberg is a recipient of Guggenheim and Soros Media Fellowships. His PBS film “School Prayer” won the National EMMY Award. Others: “Castaways”, “The Legacy of Jedwabne”, “Saved by Deportation”, “The Peretzniks”, and most recently “Karski & The Lords of Humanity” and “Shimon’s Returns”. Among other projects, Slawomir’s Jewish-themed films are widely presented across the globe and continue to bring him international recognition.

Katka Reszke is a writer, documentary filmmaker, photographer and researcher in Jewish history, culture, and identity. She holds a Doctorate in Jewish Education from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and is a recipient of fellowships from the Mandel Foundation and the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture. Author of “Return Of The Jew: Identity Narratives of the Third Post-Holocaust Generation of Jews in Poland”, she lectures on different aspects of the Polish-Jewish experience at educational and cultural institutions across North America and Europe. Her documentary film titles include: “Coming Out Polish Style”, “Magda” and “Shimon’s Returns”.
